We are so lucky to have this next lovely lady as part of our Embrace Series on our BLOG. Jess Ryder has been the driving force behind multiple screenings of EMBRACE in the Toowoomba Region so we thought it fitting to ask Jess her take on how she embraces her body!
Over to you Jess:
I never wanted to be the pin up girl for body image in Toowoomba. I was never completely comfortable with putting myself out there and sharing my journey about my body, opening myself up to the possible internet trolls that lurk around facebook waiting to pray on someone like me, laying myself vulnerable to the world. I am still on my EMBRACE journey and like you I sometimes have days when I struggle with my body too but through my journey with EMBRACE those days are easier to deal with and I am stronger to overcome them.
For those of you who haven’t heard of me or seen me in the news my name is Jess Ryder. I am a Body Image Movement Global Ambassador and the voice behind Embrace Darling Downs and the reason why there is a small ripple of change starting to happen in Toowoomba as a result of my passion to share EMBRACE the documentary with the Toowoomba community.
How did I come to be in this position?
Well when the trailer for EMBRACE popped up in my facebook feed in May last year, I watched it with tears streaming down my face. Here was a film that described exactly how I felt about myself when I looked in the mirror, when I thought about my body. I’d never actually voiced out loud about how I felt about my body or told anyone but had always had these thoughts and feelings inside hoping that one day I would be beautiful, be perfect, be slim. Here was a film that was giving a voice to what I was feeling and thinking. I knew instantly that I had to see this film. It was just sheer dumb arse luck that I had actually booked a trip to Sydney 12months earlier that just happened to fall on the same weekend that EMBRACE was going to have its world premiere at the Sydney Film Festival. I couldn’t believe that I was lucky enough to be able to be there for the first ever screening of this film. It was like the universe already knew what it had install for me and what was about to happen.
I had tears in my eyes within the first 30secs of the movie starting but managed to hold back until the last 30secs when the tears over flowed and rolled down my cheeks. Seeing Embrace made me realise that I wasn't alone, I wasn't the only woman who thought and felt like this about my body. That perfect woman I see, who I yearn to look like is feeling the same way about her body as I do about mine. At the end of seeing Embrace I felt empowered, motivated and inspired, I turned to my friend and said I need to get this film to the women (and men) of Toowoomba.
I don't usually get on board with campaigns but after seeing EMBRACE and when I heard that there was a possibility that it might not be shown in Toowoomba I suddenly had this fire burning inside me and this drive that I knew I had to get this film to Toowoomba. I had to share this message with everyone because although I still have body hang ups and struggles I am able to feel better about myself and more confident and grateful for the body I have and what it can do, than how I felt before I saw Embrace.
When I first set up the campaign and facebook event I invited my measly but important 20 friends, I just had the hopes of meeting the minimum number of tickets sales of 60 but within 48 hours my event had been shared and word of mouth had spread and before I knew it there were 350 people invited, then 400, then 500, then over 650!! My little cinema of 85 sold out in 7 days and so I was bumped up to a bigger cinema and the extra tickets sold out in 48 hours!!! When I announced the event had sold out for a second time my facebook lit up like I had never seen it before. The outcry from the people of Toowoomba who had missed out on tickets was overwhelming and before I knew it my first screening was bumped up a second time to a bigger cinema and before I knew it I had sold out a 250 seat cinema.
Needless to say over the next 6 months I would go onto to do this 4 more times and end up hosting 4 sold out screening in Toowoomba and a sold out screening in Roma!! ROMA!! I didn’t even know anyone or have any contacts in Roma but I do now!
I have been humbly rewarded for my passion to bring Embrace to Toowoomba and now with over 900 people following me on facebook through Embrace Darling Downs I am now Daring to Dream in 2017 and want to Inspire, Motivate and Connect people to go forward on their own journey to start loving themselves now NOT WHEN. You see we all say I’ll be happy when....*Insert dream or goal here* but the thing is sometimes WHEN doesn’t happen, sometimes WHEN gets pushed back AND sometimes WHEN is unrealistically unattainable that if you wait for WHEN you may never be happy. I believe and am inspired by the words of Taryn Brumfitt (star and producer of EMBRACE)....
“Every breath you take is one step closer to your last. Don’t think about it in a negative way. We don’t know how long we are here for, so let’s not be at war with our bodies, let’s have fun with our lives. Don’t let a bit of tummy define you. These things don’t define us – these wobbles, these stretch marks, these lines, these things don’t matter, just go out and dive into your days”
Toowoomba has been amazing and as a result of my dedication and (unpaid) work to share the message of EMBRACE things are going from strength to strength for me and I have big big goals on the horizon for my own journey and for inspiring others journeys.
The next big thing for Embrace Darling Downs is HUGE and I am so excited to be able to be part of this and be working with some amazing, supportive people to drive my message and if it’s ok with the Food For Life team (who I know are excited about this anyway) here is a shameless plug for what is next.............

Self-Development for Girls
with Amy Cook from Shining Hearts Everyday and Kristy Jackson of Moving Mountains
As mothers themselves, both Kristy Jackson and Amy Cook understand the need to have a supportive community available to empower their daughters. In their roles as Mindfulness Practitioner and Youth Mentor, Kristy and Amy, respectively, work closely with young girls with the desire to help them achieve self-awareness and inner confidence keeping them connected and contributing to their lives.
Kristy began studying with the Mind Body Food Institute and completed her studies in June 2016 which led to the birth of Kristy Jackson Moving Mountains. Kristy is an Accredited and Certified Meditation Teacher, Chair Yoga Instructor and Holistic Counsellor and soon after completing her studies yearned for more learning. This led Kristy on the path to fulfilling one of her biggest dreams where she became a Mindful Schools trained Educator. Kristy’s passion lies within working alongside youth and helping them to foster a growth mindset through awareness of the whole self, which begins from looking within and making that very important mind body connection. Kristy is a Mum to 2 amazing daughters, a wonderful wife to a very lucky man and an all-round kind and good human. Kristy loves connecting with likeminded folk who have embarked on their self-growth journey.
Amy recently launched Shining Hearts Everyday as a platform to commence her Youth Mentoring hosting self-development workshops and 1:1 coaching. She currently works full time and balances the fine task of dancing to her heartsong, being a meaningful mama to her 2 gorgeous daughters, loving wifey and rocking the family balance sheet each month. Amy completed her study as a Youth Mentor in 2016 and is energised working with young girls engaging with them to build their self-worth and follow their dreams. Connecting with people has forever been Amy’s strength, she’s curious (possibly borderline nosy), always ready to learn and generally a happy, friendly soul.
Kristy and Amy want to connect with young girls and hold a safe space for them where they know they can be themselves, be uplifted and know they are valued. In a world where our girls are competing with Instagram Reality and Facebook Personas, we want them to know they are everything they need to be because of their inner beauty shining, not because they nailed their selfie after 50+ shots.
We have the opportunity to create an amazing future for our girls, with authentic connections, nurturing support and consistent messages, imagine what their world will be like and the lives they create for themselves!?!

My family and I were lucky enough to see one of the Embrace screenings. Me only being 12 and having two social media accounts realised how much social media does effect everyone especially young girls and women.
All of my friends have at least one social media account, some girls have more. The effect on young women that Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and many more sites like these is horrific. The reason I have brought this up is because I see girls every day posting pictures of themselves in just a bra or sometimes even nude with their arms hiding places that most don’t need to see. This is to get the attention of the boys they met a school social that has followed them on social media or their peers. It is even sadder that these girls are not even in their teen years yet.
Most of my peers self worth is all about their body and how much of a thigh gap they have or whether they look like Kim Kardashian or not. Or sadly how many boys text them back from the school social. Even how popular a girl is can contradict my peers self worth.
I don’t completely embrace my body yet as I have only just started my journey of embracing my body. Last year I had a tough time with school where I got bullied really badly because I was ‘too fat’ and I ‘ran weirdly’. I refused to eat in front of other people because I didn’t want to look like I ate too much. At the same time there were other girls that had eating disorders and were into cutting as a relief from depression. My environment at the time was obviously not amazing which kind of made my behaviour ‘ok’, which actually was not ‘ok’ at all. After all of this bullying, my sister passed at a young age which also made it hard for me to love my body and who I am.
I enjoy getting my hair done, playing around with makeup and getting my nails done. I embrace my body by surrounding it with people that I love who make me laugh. I love hanging out with the team at Food For Life as they bring happiness and love into my life. I understand that making the choice to surround myself with people I love is a much better influence on me and helps me embrace whom I truly am!

Following on from with our theme of embracing our bodies, we would like to introduce you to Jules Brunner. Jules is the wonderful Kinesiologist that practices out of Food for Life here at 18 Hill Street, Toowoomba. She recently took the EMBRACE documentary to the Gold Coast and knows more than anyone through her work the importance of embracing our bodies. This blog is a personal insight into Jules own journey as well as tools she uses to Embrace her body!

Ok so lets have a look at embracing myself….
Enter Julia to the planet – electric orange hair and a huge head that needed to be vacuum suctioned from my poor mother – not perhaps the easiest start to my own body image movement! From as early as I can remember there was conversation about how I screamed all the time and my bright red, electric orange hair that perhaps even some of those closest thought was ugly!
Enter body image issues…..
I was always a skinny girl – never once in my life was I tormented for ever being fat – there was the freckles issue though – cheers for those genetics Dad! The endless taunts about being the freckled face fart machine or looking weird because my skin was white and dotty, now those things impacted myself worth.
I am very grateful for all the ways my body has physically contributed to my life. Allowing me to be able to experience riding a bike and then motorbike, running and swimming. It also supported me to walk down the aisle, then grow and deliver my children, travel to different countries and hike to special places that will forever be in my heart. To be able to have snorkelled in Bora Bora with the sting rays and reef sharks and trek around Disneyland with my children. My body has allowed me the enjoyment of tasting different foods and meeting different people……thanks body…..you rock!
I have come to realize in my adult life, and most certainly now as part of my work as a kinesiologist, that no matter who we are, or where we’ve come from, we have got some body consciousness about us. If by chance we have excellent body image, it will be our intellect or the way we are too emotional or not successful enough or not wealthy enough that will badger our self-worth and hinder us from truly embracing ourselves on some level.
My journey of self-care has been on and off. I would love to be here telling you all how to do it and how wonderful it is – but I’m not. I am here to say just get back on the horse. I have just this past week encouraged myself to get back on track with my self care and get myself feeling better. So how do I do this?
Firstly, a kinesiology appointment to find out what food and supplements my body is needing to increase my life energy. It was wheat and grains out and magnesium, Vitamin B and Vitamin C in! So, that’s easy – just do that! WRONG!! I forget and get too lazy and all sorts of excuses – this time I’ve got them all in a handy spot and a stock of doses in my hand bag and car for when I’m out and about. I will see how it goes.
Secondly, meditation. Meditation helps me endlessly…..when I take the time to do it! Do I meditate like a Buddhist monk for two hours a day – ummmm NO! Its more like 15 minutes of me squirming while trying to manage my pins and needles in my leg or foot! And then trying to mindfully ignore the wedgie I have ended up with from squirming my bottom around managing the pins and needles. Then I spend some time bringing my wandering mind back like a naughty two year old that has wandered off in the shops! After all that is said and done though……I find peace. A peace that cannot be really be put into words because it is just simply peace. Here there are no judgements or feelings that I could be doing better – just peace and peace alone. Maybe 10 minutes of true meditation is all I manage – but to have that peace in my day is truly one of the best things I can do in my self care. I embrace peace.
Mindful conversation with myself. If you are anything like me, you would rarely say anything to intentionally hurt another person. If your friend tells you they are fat or ugly or hopeless we don’t say “ Yes you most definitely are a hideous individual’ . We correct them and remind them we love them, we ask if we can help them with anything, we tell them we feel grateful to have them in our lives. So please tell me why it is we feel it’s totally acceptable to shame and hate on ourselves in our mirror every day?? I have consciously made the effort to stop and smile at myself every day in the mirror. Just simply smile and give myself some approval. It’s not easy some days. I tried praising myself and my body and it just didn’t feel authentic to me. But what I have done is stop the quick glance and the insult of my body – nice freckles on your big thick thighs, nice c- section scar and stretchmark hips, oh gee that cellulite is looking great today – NO MORE!! Just a smile and an acceptance glance to say “You are enough”. I’m not talking myself up or down – just a place of acceptance to remind myself that I am enough. The same thing I would like all that cross my path to feel. Practise what I preach.
The final part of my embracing myself is that I surround myself with folks that mirror the life path I want for myself. The people that remind me to stay on task. The people who give me an emotional uppercut when I need one and also hold me close when I feel like all is lost. These people are my human conscience. An extension of my true self. They know me and recognize themselves in me too. I am so VERY VERY grateful to be able to say I have these people in my workplace, my personal life and in my home and extended family. I can say at this point too that it wasn’t always this way and perhaps this adjustment of myself and those around me has been the hardest, yet the most powerful change to make. We all need an authentic, loving team on our side to help us nourish and guide ourselves towards our best selves.
So – what is my ultimate advice in guiding you to embrace yourselves….
Just try – get back on the horse – be consistently steering yourself back on track. My goal is to stay on track longer each time. The biggest part for me was finding my authentic self and shifting the old sabotages and habits that no longer served me. This revealed a beautiful truth to me – that I was enough all along. All I have to ever do now is just steer the ship back on course as consistently as I can.

After attending the EMBRACE documentary, we thought it was fitting to explore what embracing our own bodies means to each of us. This BLOG post was written by Jahna, for those of you who don't know Jahna she works behind the scenes in events, administration and marketing here at Food for Life.

I was a bit late to the EMBRACE documentary party, but had the privilege of watching the fourth screening in Toowoomba on the weekend. EMBRACE certainly shed some light and touched me on how brutal social media can be both positively and negatively. To see Taryn share her own personal before and after pictures when she realised she truly loved her body just the way it was – inspiring! Then to see the fall out of how many people actually loath their bodies, the cries for help and worst of all the negative comments to Taryn herself from perfect strangers making judgements.
It really started to make me think……..
I love social media, and I frequent it daily sharing photos from time to time but I use it as a tool to seek out inspiration, motivational quotes and what my friends are interested in or loving at the moment. I am not against social media, it has its place and I find it a great source of information. However what troubled me was that we now live in a society where we are judged by “how many likes” we get, and perfect strangers can comment and have a detrimental impact to a person’s wellbeing. What ever happened to the phrase “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”, has this not translated to our digital age?
This is a scary concept for me and it really left me questioning how I EMBRACE my body? Do I search for external validation from social media to confirm that the life I live is fulfilling? Do I like or even love my body because other people tell me I look good or pretty?
I guess my journey to love my body started a few years ago. I remember listening or reading something from Jess Ainscough about dry body brushing. At the time I was just starting to change what I ate to predominately whole foods and making peace with my plate in the hope that it would help with my daily struggle with anxiety. I remember so vividly having to look myself in the mirror, right in the eyes for the very first time as I ran this brush over my body and honour and love every single part of it. It was raw, yet refreshing to look at my own body so closely and to be thankful for what it does for me every day.
Fast forward to current day and I guess over the last few years I have added (and taken away) a number of tools to my wellbeing tool kit that support and help me EMBRACE my body and feed my soul. I have daily routines like oil pulling, body brushing and sometimes meditation (I am still working on this one). I try my best to eat whole foods and have a grain free diet because I have found this works best for me at keeping my anxiety at bay. I have a support network of practitioners around me from doctors to healers or chiropractors and kinesologists that help me make sure my body is responding and working the best it can be at any given time. Most importantly I have found that nature is my friend I love to spend time in the park, walk by myself or with friends or write in a journal. The most important thing for me is that I don’t have to be perfect, I don’t get it right 100% of the time and I slip and fall – often.
I love that I can post a picture of an experience, a travel adventure and a random shot of my cat and people care enough about me to like and comment, however this doesn’t drive or fuel me 100% in my life. I feel like the tools I use and how I EMBRACE my body and soul are very much an inside job and it’s a behind the scenes function of my life which is not broadcast on a daily basis that make me feel loved, honoured, supported and most importantly ME.

I have been working in the health industry for the past three years, continuing to develop my knowledge. As a qualified nutritionist I have a sound understanding of nutrition and the body, however, working with people and helping people achieve health is something completely different.
I have grown to understand what inhibits health in people and have developed protocols to help change these habits. Sprouted Health aims to eliminate the barriers of time, motivation, enjoyment, quick fixes and fear around nutrition and provide lasting health!
I aim to treat not just the physical aspect of health, but encompassing the mental, emotional and spiritual side, which really does provide the holistic approach, we all need for optimal health.

Excerpt from Elspeth Haswell-Smith's Literature Review "The Relationship between Microbiota, Fermented Foods, Diet, Health Behaviours and Mental Health"
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), metabolic and mental disorders lead the global burden of disease, urging scientists and practitioners to research and focus on methods of prevention (WHO, 2004). When an individual experiences a mental health disorder, it is assessed by a set of symptoms and behaviours that impact their ability to function as usual (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013). WHO (2016a) defines mental health as the positive foundation for individual well-being and the effective functioning of a community. Mental health refers to the capacity of individuals to behave in ways that promote their emotional and social wellbeing (Khatib, Bhui, & Stanfield, 2013). The most prevalent mental health disorders are depression and anxiety (WHO, 2016a). It is estimated that depression and anxiety affects 350 million people worldwide (WHO, 2016b).
Depression can become a serious health condition when an individual experiences long-lasting symptoms (WHO, 2016b). It can cause the affected person to suffer greatly and function poorly at work, school and in the family (WHO, 2016b). The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) define depression as a loss of interest or pleasure in nearly all activities. Individuals report feeling sad, irritable, depressed, worthless, hopelessness, guilt, and experience changes in weight, appetite and sleep behaviour (APA, 2013). Additionally, the DSM-5 defines anxiety as significant distress or impairment that interferes with ordinary routine in social settings, at work or school, or during other everyday activities (APA, 2013). There is extensive literature on mental health and the role of health behaviours; highlighting key areas such as exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption and relaxation activities (Jacka, Mykletun, & Berk, 2012; Klainin-Yobas, Win Nuang, Yew, & Lau, 2015; Mcguire, Anderson, & Fulbrook, 2013). These key health behaviours can positively or negatively impact anxiety and depression. Further, recent evidence has explored a relationship between diet quality and the risk of depression and anxiety (Opie, O’Neil, Itsiopoulos & Jacka, 2015). It has been suggested that diet quality influences mental health symptoms (Opie et al., 2015). Building upon this, researchers are exploring the connection between the microbiota gut-brain axis and mental health (Dash, Clarke, Berk & Jacka, 2015). The microbiota refers to the nearly 100 trillion bacteria harboured in the human intestine, and essential for health (Dash et al., 2015). Foster and McVey Neufeld (2013) propose the microbiota influences mental health; specifically anxiety and depression. If the bacteria in the gut are not at the optimal levels it is a detriment to the individual (Foster & McVey Neufeld, 2013). Bacteria strains that support healthy microbiota are described as probiotics, which are defined as live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts result in a health benefit to the individual (Hilimire, DeVylder, & Forestall, 2015). Fermented foods contain numerous probiotic bacterial species such as lactobacillus and bifidobacteria that are beneficial to our microbiota (Hilimire et al., 2015). Fermentation is a method of preparing foods correctly in order for bacteria to grow (Hilimire et al., 2015). Fermented foods include a vast list of food types such as sauerkraut, kimchi, fermented milk products, kefir, kombucha, and fermented soy products (Hilimire et al., 2015). There are currently no studies investigating whether fermented foods containing probiotics alongside a healthy diet influence anxiety and depression (Hilimire et al., 2015). In addition there are no studies investigating whether fermented foods containing probiotics influence anxiety and depression (Hilimire et al., 2015). Therefore, this literature review aims to explore the microbiota gut-brain axis, fermented foods, diet quality, whilst appreciating key health behaviours, on anxiety and depression. Kristen, Ivarsson, Parker, and Ziegert (2015) recommended that research on health behaviours are explored within a biopsychosocial framework due to complex subsystems including the biological, psychological, and social influences that impact mental and physical health. Engel (1977) explored patient care and stated that psychosocial factors are to be inclusive of the biomedical model. The biopsychosocial model understands that there is interplay of biological, psychological and social (Engel, 1977). Biological factors embody the genetic makeup and characteristics an individual inherits from their birth parents, for example the microbiota (Engel, 1977). In addition, health behaviours and diet adopted by the individual represent the role of psychological factors that incorporate aspects of an individual’s behaviour and mental processing (Engel, 1977). Lastly, social factors consider that relationships influence the individual (e.g., social support; Engel, 1977). The microbiota gut brain axis is a complex system that has recently taken stage in science due to the role it plays in our daily health and wellbeing.

Hi my name is Jodie Heselwood. I am a Functional Nutrition Consultant and Lifestyle Coach, and founder of The Whole Way.
Up until now my journey of health and happiness was purely selfish. My desire to keep feeling amazing and not fall back into my old ways of feeling tired and exhausted was my main drive. Once you have experienced years of Chronic Fatigue and Depression there’s not a chance in Hell that you would let yourself go back to that after having a taste of freedom.
When you find yourself a mother of two little humans and the sole person responsible for their health and happiness, you simply can’t ignore the valuable information you’ve accumulated on your own health journey.
Along the way I found myself with an abundance of energy, clarity of mind, and an intense gratitude. I couldn’t sit back and watch the world’s health diminish, aware that I had the knowledge to help others, especially my loved ones and those around me. To see the difference I have already made in other’s lives drives me even more to spread the word.
If only everyone knew that by changing a few things they ate, replacing some household products and creating a loving community around them could be the simple answer to their health, not to mention the prevention of many chronic and immune diseases that are becoming way too common.
As simple as it is, it is hard to change our ways; I KNOW! I now live for guiding and empowering people through these changes, because I know from experience just how worth it it is.
In July 2015 I took the leap into studying Cyndi O’Meara’s Nutrition Course. With my two kids Taye, 5 and Airlie, 4, in tow (we home school) and my husband working away, I drew upon my passion for health and the unbelievable support from the Agnes Water community. I managed to educate myself with this treasure chest of knowledge, that I now want to pour out into the world, starting with my clients.
If all I do is inspire people to question what they are putting into their body, then I will be happy. We have all been put on this Earth for a reason. Mine is this. Mwah xoxo
